Hospital welcomes newest da Vinci robotic system
Liberty Hospital originally purchased its first da Vinci robotic surgery system back in 2006 and is now pleased to welcome the newest version of the system, which arrived in the Surgery Department on Aug. 31.

Since the first system’s arrival, Liberty Hospital has expanded its use to not only include procedures in urology (prostatectomies, partial nephrectomies, radical nephrectomies, etc.) but also gynecology (hysterectomies, sacralcolpopexies, myomectomies, etc.). And this new system has the potential to expand into even more surgical areas in the future, including general surgery, cardiology and otolaryngology as well as fluorescence imaging, which is useful in cancer control and vessel awareness.

In the meantime, it also brings with it a host of new benefits for the surgeons running the controls, including:

- High-definition vision in 3-D
- A better audio system for clearer communication between surgeons and Surgery staff members
- Streamlined draping
- Enhanced ergonomic settings
- Sensory grip control bumpers that simulate tactile feedback

One of the first cases on the new system was performed by Kent Tegeler, MD, a gynecologist at Liberty Hospital. The patient had an irregularly shaped uterus, enlarged seven to eight times its normal size due to uterine fibroids. The increased size made operating around the ureter even tougher.

“I was able to clearly visualize and dissect the ureter away from a fibroid that was literally lying on it,” Tegeler said. “With conventional open surgery or even with advanced laparoscopic techniques, the ureter could easily have been injured. I was able to avoid a significant complication due to the incredible visualization I was able to get with the new da Vinci system.”

Liberty Hospital is a 250-bed regional medical center serving Clay and Platte counties as well as the northwest Missouri corridor. Founded in 1974, Liberty Hospital is a public, not-for-profit hospital, created for the benefit of its community as a political subdivision district hospital under Chapter 206 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri. It is governed by a six-member, publicly elected board of trustees who serve six-year terms. More than 1,900 employees and 300 physicians deliver compassionate, exceptional care using the latest technology and a full range of services.
