Crossett Named A National Grassroots Champion
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Joseph W. Crossett, administrator of Liberty Hospital, has been named a 2008 Grassroots Champion by the American Hospital Association. Crossett was recognized for his leadership in educating lawmakers about the effects of state and federal policies on hospitals and the health care system. The award, announced April 8 at AHA’s Annual Membership Meeting in Washington, D.C., was conferred at the Missouri Hospital Association’s board meeting April 18.

The Partnership for Action Grassroots Champion award was created to honor hospital leaders who effectively educate elected officials about hospitals’ vital roles in their communities. Recipients are recognized for their exemplary performance in broadening the base of community support for hospitals and providing tireless advocacy for hospitals and patients. The award is presented annually to one individual from each state. MHA nominated Crossett to receive the award.

“Joe’s commitment to health care and his deep understanding of community hospitals’ missions have made him a dynamic advocate in Washington, D.C., and Jefferson City,” said Marc D. Smith, MHA president. “His passion and energy in educating lawmakers has led to an expanded understanding of hospital issues and has contributed greatly to hospitals’ ability to provide care in their communities.”

In addition to more than 30 years of service to Liberty Hospital, Crossett also has dedicated himself to providing valuable community service to the Liberty area and the state’s hospital community.

Crossett has been a member of the MHA Board of Trustees since 1995.
Beginning in March 2003, he served as acting board chair and became board chair in 2004. He was the president of the Kansas City Metropolitan Healthcare Council in 2001 and served chair of MHA’s legislative advisory council from 2000-2002. Crossett received MHA’s Visionary Leadership Award in 2007.

“Joe’s leadership was essential in developing MHA’s grassroots network of advocates,” Smith said. “The program now provides a framework for hospital leaders and individuals concerned with health issues to educate their communities and lawmakers about the effects of regulations and legislation on hospital care.

“Joe also has been extremely effective in engaging hospital trustees in health advocacy,” Smith added. “His understanding of a trustee’s role in health improvement has been central to the success of Liberty Hospital and has provided collateral benefits for
hospitals statewide.”

Crossett also has been recognized for his extensive community service in Liberty. In 2005, he received the Northland Community Service Award from Commerce Bank. He was honored by William Jewell College with the Citation for Achievement award in 2002 for his leadership and service as a William Jewell alumnus. He also is an active member in his church, Liberty Manor Baptist.
