What is an Abdominal Ultrasound exam?
This is an examination used to evaluate the pancreas, spleen, liver, gallbladder, abdominal aorta and kidneys.

How should I prepare for the Abdominal Ultrasound exam?
You must not have anything to eat or drink after your evening meal the day prior to the exam.

What does the Abdominal Ultrasound equipment look like?
The equipment consists of a transducer, a monitor and acart that contains the electronics used to process the returning echo’s.

What will I experience during this exam?
You will be asked to lie on your back for the exam. Warm gel will be applied to your abdominal area and a transducer will be inserted into the gel so that high energy sound can be transmitted into your abdomen and high-quality echoes received to form an image of your internal anatomy. This part of the exam will not be unpleasant unless your abdomen is already tender.

How will I benefit from having this exam?
Abdominal Sonography can be used to help diagnose:

∙ some liver abnormalities

∙ evaluate the source of abdominal pain

∙ evaluate the size of organs (liver, pancreas, testes, spleen)

∙ determine if the gall bladder has stones

∙ determine if there is an abdominal aneurysm

How will I be notified about the results of my Abdominal Ultrasound exam?
The radiologist will interpret the findings of your exam and have a report faxed to your physician within 24-hours. Your physician will contact you with results.
