Although our neurologists and neurosurgeons work closely with a variety of the hospital’s special services to provide comprehensive patient care, two of the most common neurosurgical procedures conducted at the hospital are laminectomies and diskectomies.
Laminectomy is a surgery that relieves back pain by removing a small portion of bone or disc material that may be putting pressure on the patient’s nerves.
Diskectomy is a surgery in which the surgeon removes a herniated disc, relieving spinal cord or nerve root pressure to alleviate pain.
Following these types of surgery, patients recover in the hospital’s Orthopedics/Neuro unit, by staff who have special training in caring for patients recovering from spinal surgery.
