With the trauma team activated, the patient is greeted on arrival by an emergency department physician, registered nurses, surgical technicians, respiratory therapists, radiology technicians and a chaplain. Because trauma is often a surgical condition, the trauma surgeon assumes management of the care within minutes of the patient’s arrival.
After a quick and thorough evaluation that can include X-rays, CT scans, sonograms, lab work and any necessary lifesaving interventions, the patient is moved on to definitive care. This can include surgery, admission to the intensive care unit or a step down unit, or transfer to a specialized higher level of care. Upon admission, the patient’s care team begins planning for discharge and working to return the patient to their pre-injury level of living.
