Liberty Hospital
Lymphedema

Our certified specialists have developed a comprehensive program to effectively manage lymphedema.

Lymphedema is an accumulation of fluid that causes swelling in the arms, legs, or trunk. If left untreated, lymphedema can result in an excessively large limb, decreased wound healing, and possible infection. Lymphedema is different from regular edema because it develops slowly and does not reduce with elevation. There is no current cure but it can be managed through complete decongestive therapy treatment.

Lymphedema can develop when lymphatic vessels are missing or damaged due to:
• Congenital reasons
• Surgery
• Radiation
• Trauma
• Infection

Treatment may include:
• Manual techniques for lymphatic drainage
• Compression bandaging
• Home program treatments
• Exercise
• Infection control
• Lymphedema management education.
