What is open-heart surgery?
Coronary artery bypass graft surgery is usually done to open up one or more arteries in your heart. You may hear this surgery referred to as a CABG (pronounced “cabbage”) or open-heart surgery. Parts of your heart do not get enough blood if an artery is blocked. An artery is a blood vessel (tube) that carries blood with oxygen through your body. During surgery, a graft (a piece of a blood vessel from elsewhere in your body) is used to bypass the blocked vessel and reconnect blood flow to your heart muscle.

Meet your new cardiothoracic surgeon - Michael Gorton, MD

Beginning his surgical career in Kansas City, Dr. Michael Gorton brings nearly two decades of cardiothoracic surgery experience to Liberty Hospital. His expertise is wide-ranging and includes some of the most difficult procedures in the field, including hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy; complex re-operative bypass, valve and thoracic-aneurysm surgery; adult congenital cardiac surgery; and normothermic antegrade sequential complete arch replacement, which allows surgeons to operate on the aortic arch without turning blood off to the body, a technique that Gorton pioneered.

He is one of the country’s premiere cardiothoracic surgeons and has been affiliated with two of the region’s most successful cardiology programs. He is a nationally recognized surgeon, instructor and expert and is a key component of Liberty Hospital’s new heart and vascular center.
