What is a Testicular Ultrasound examination? This procedure is also referred to as a scrotal ultrasound examination. The procedure is used to evaluate disorders (disease or trauma) to the testicles. Specifically, the procedure is used to evaluate: palpable masses (whether a mass is cystic or solid), the possible cause of infertility, locate un-descended testis, determine the cause of pain or swelling in the testicular area.
How should I prepare for the Testicular Ultrasound examination? There is no special preparation for this exam.
What does the Testicular Ultrasound equipment look like? The equipment consists of a transducer, a monitor and a cart that contains the electronics used to process the returning echo’s.
What will I experience during this exam? You will be asked to lie on your back for the exam. Warm gel will be applied to your testicular area and the technologist will wand the ultrasound transducer gently over your testicles. This will not be an unpleasant experience unless your testicles are extremely sensitive. The technologist will inquire as to your sensitivity, so every effort will be taken to not cause you discomfort. The exam will probably take about 30 minutes.
How will I be notified about the results of my Doppler exam? The radiologist will interpret the findings of your exam and have a report faxed to your physician within 24 hours. Your physician will contact you with results. |
