Liberty Hospital
Thyroid/Hyperthyroid treatment and scan

* Inform your physician if you are pregnant or breast feeding.
You have been scheduled for a Thyroid Treatment and Scan study which involves the use of a radioactive material.

Patient Preparation
Once your appointment is scheduled, you should stop taking medications (i.e., Synthroid, Cytomel, etc.). Your doctor will advise you how long in advance you need to discontinue it. Prior to this exam you should have received an I-123 or I-131 uptake and to determine treatment dosage. Prior to any treatment you should have all appropriate blood tests ordered by the physician, such as a pregnancy test, TSH (thyroid stimulating hormones), and/or TG (thyroglobulin). Do not eat or drink for an hour before swallowing the radioactive material. Informed consent will be obtained.

Procedure
You will receive the therapy treatment by mouth. Your physician will provide instructions as to the return appointment times, if a post therapy scan is needed. Post therapy precautions will be provided relating to the amount of therapy given.
