What is a Vascular/Doppler Ultrasound examination? This is an examination is used to look at the arteries and veins
How should I prepare for the Vascular/Doppler exam? There is no special preparation for this exam.
What does the Vascular/Doppler equipment look like? The equipment consists of a transducer, a monitor and a cart that contains the electronics used to process the returning echoes.
What will I experience during this exam? You will be asked to lie on your back for the exam. Warm gel will be applied to the area of your body to be studied. Blood pressure cuffs may be applied to your arms and/or legs to measure pressures above and below the areas of concern. You may be asked to walk up and down the corridor for a period of time. You will not experience discomfort during this exam unless you are already experiencing tenderness in your affected extremity or if you experience cramping when walking.
How will I benefit from having this exam?
∙ venous Doppler is used to look for clots in the arm and leg veins
∙ arterial Doppler is used to evaluate blood flow in the arteries of the legs.
∙ mesenteric Doppler is used to evaluate the arteries that supply the bowel
∙ abdominal Doppler is used to evaluate the veins and arteries of the liver and
spleen
How will I be notified about the results of my Vascular/Doppler exam? The radiologist will interpret the findings of your exam and have a report faxed to your physician within 24-hours. Your physician will contact you with results. |
