The level of radioactivity used for this exam is extremely low and has no side effects.You will be positioned next to a special detector called a gamma camera. The camera does not produce any radiation. It will be placed close to the part of your body being imaged.
Patient Preparation
Do not eat or drink anything three hours before the test. Unless contraindicated by your physician, do not take Beta blockers for 48-hours or calcium channel blockers for 24-hours prior to the exam.
Procedure
Using an IV Catheter in a vein in your arm, your red blood cells will be tagged with a radioactive material. This tagging procedure takes about 30 minutes. You will also be attached to a heart monitor. Painless images will be taken as you lay on your back. This takes about 30 minutes.
