Taking your baby home for the first time should be one of the most exciting times of your life, whether you are a first-time mother or you are taking your baby home to other siblings. It is a time for celebration.
It can also be a time when a never-ending number of questions can arise. Thankfully, Liberty Hospital is here to help.
As part of our home follow-up visit program, a registered nurse from the Birthing Center will visit you and your baby after you return home. This unique service is FREE of charge to all families who deliver at Liberty Hospital. No other hospital in the Kansas City area offers this free service.
What Will a Visit Involve? The registered nurse will examine your baby from head to toe. This will include checking your baby’s weight and umbilical cord. Some babies require follow-up newborn blood tests after returning home. After consulting with your baby’s physician, the nurse can draw this blood sample at your home. Any additional charges for necessary follow-up tests can be submitted to your insurance company by the hospital.
Questions you have concerning your baby’s feeding schedule, sleeping habits, crying, hygiene, etc. will also be addressed.
The nurse will also examine you. She will evaluate your physical and emotional health since giving birth, including assessing the healing of an episiotomy or cesarean section incision, and will answer questions about breastfeeding and emotional changes and adjustments.
Scheduling the Visit Before you leave the hospital, one of our nurses will meet with you to discuss the best time to make your home appointment. We plan on visiting each family within four days after leaving the hospital. The visit should last approximately one to two hours, depending on your needs. A follow-up report of this visit will be sent to both your doctor and your baby’s doctor.
