What does it mean to be a Level II trauma center? A Level II trauma center is verified by the state of Missouri, and committed to these standards:
- Retaining a staff of dedicated trauma care providers, including board-certified surgeons, board-certified emergency medicine physicians, specialty-certified registered nurses, clergy, and a multitude of ancillary staff. All of these team members are trained in caring for the traumatically injured patient’s body, mind, and spirit.
- Providing comprehensive, board-certified subspecialties that include anesthesiology, neurosurgery, interventional radiology, orthopedics and others.
- Maintaining surgeons, staff and facilities that are equipped and available 24 hours a day, every day.
- Having rehabilitation physicians on staff to facilitate recovery and the quickest possible return to pre-injury functioning.
- Maintaining transfer agreements with area Level I and specialty medical facilities for those patients, both adult and children, needing the highest level of specialty care.
- Maintaining a strong working relationship with regional emergency medical services to ensure patients are transported quickly and safely to the most appropriate facility.
- Offering professional and community education and outreach, including:
- Community education on injury prevention and safety
- Senior adult safe driving courses
- School presentations on the hazards of driving under the influence
- Seatbelt awareness programs
- Child safety seat inspections.
- Membership in a local consortium of trauma centers and national trauma care organizations.
- Education and training for pre-hospital providers as well as hospital staff.
