Bronchoscopy
One of the diagnostic tests the Liberty Hospital Pulmonary Services Department performs is a fiberoptic bronchoscopy. During a bronchoscopy, the physician inserts a flexible tube into the patient’s airway, allowing the doctor to actually see inside the windpipe, or trachea, and airways, or bronchial tubes. This test gives the physician better information for diagnosis and treatment, and may be performed on an inpatient or outpatient basis.

Pulmonary Function Testing
Another test that can determine how well a patient’s lungs are working is a pulmonary function test. This test measures how much air the patient can inhale and blow back out; how fast the air can come out; and how well oxygen diffuses into the bloodstream. For example, the patient may be asked to blow as hard as they can into an air-measurement device called a spirometer. Pulmonary function testing can be done as an inpatient or outpatient.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is common for patients suffering from lung disease such as emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Our program combines education, exercise training and behavioral intervention. Ample handicapped parking is available for those patients whose ability to walk is limited by their disease.

If needed, pulmonary rehabilitation patients receive help with smoking cessation and nutritional needs. They also may learn special breathing techniques and ways to conserve energy. Each patient is given an exercise program that's especially designed for their health needs. This may include aerobic exercises, such as walking and riding an exercise bike, as well as special exercises for the arms and legs. The ultimate goal is to help the patient be more efficient in their activities of daily living and to learn how to build strength and endurance for more independent living.
