What is a Thyroid Ultrasound examination?
This is an examination of the thyroid glad located in the front of the neck.
The exam is useful in the evaluation of palpable masses in the thyroid, the evaluation of possible causes of abnormally functioning tissue, and for correlation of abnormal lab findings.
How should I prepare for the Thyroid Ultrasound examination? There is no special preparation for this exam.
What does the Thyroid Ultrasound equipment look like? The equipment consists of a transducer, a monitor and a cart that contains the electronics used to process the returning echoes.
What will I experience during this exam? You will be asked to lie on your back for the exam. Warm gel will be applied to your neck and a transducer will be inserted into the gel so that the technologist and effectively transmit ultrasound and receive echo’s from your body. This will not be an unpleasant experience unless your neck is already very tender.
How will I be notified about the results of my exam? The radiologist will interpret the findings of your exam and have a report faxed to your physician within 24-hours. Your physician will contact you with results. |
