When Santa Childs, R.N., reports to work at 5:40 a.m. in the Liberty Hospital Birthing Center, it’s time to deliver!
“I don’t know what it is, but when I put my work shoes on, I’m ready,” Santa says. “I say to myself, ‘Let’s do this! Let’s have a baby today!’”
Santa is one of Liberty Hospital’s most-requested labor and delivery nurses, a job she has done here for six years. The Plattsburg resident’s nursing career started 20 years ago when she earned an associate’s degree in nursing from Park University.
“I decided to become a nurse because I already cared for my family and nursing is about caring, so I thought I would be good at it,” she says.
The Birthing Center’s patients and families agree. Santa often receives rave reviews and comments about the wonderful care she provides.
“Santa was incredible,” says Katie Guilkey, whose daughter, Brooklyn, was born at Liberty Hospital. “She was educational and friendly and made us feel like we could trust her completely, which we did. She went above and beyond by going out of her way to make sure we tried everything we could so I wouldn’t have to have a C-section. She truly blew us away, and we are extremely grateful to her for everything she did.”
Kyllie Nicas, another patient of Santa’s who gave birth to baby Liam adds, “Santa was a very great nurse. She was always checking on my pain level and took very good care of me.”
“I try to take care of my patients and their families the way I would want to be treated,” Santa says. “I support them and their choices, whether it’s their first or their fifth baby. Bringing a new life into the world is just amazing to me!”
While in Santa’s care, she shares the knowledge and experience she’s gained throughout the past two decades as a nurse, mother and grandmother.
“My family is the reason I get up and go to work each day,” Santa says. “Family is everything to me, and it’s a privilege to help other families. It’s important to include everyone in the birthing experience, from siblings to grandparents.”
Santa also credits her Liberty Hospital work family—the physicians and nursing staff at The Birthing Center—with its ranking as KC Parent Magazine readers’ “Favorite Place to Have a Baby in 2015.”
In fact, Santa says the team is so good, she would come to Liberty Hospital herself if she were having a baby. “The Birthing Center’s physicians and staff really do make a difference,” Santa says. “They go the extra mile for their patients. I’m proud to be part of such a great team!”
