AI supports breast cancer detection at Liberty Hospital

The Breast Care Center at Liberty Hospital has an important ally when it comes to the early detection of breast cancer.

Studies show that the earlier cancer is detected and treated, the better the outcome. That’s why the Breast Care Center was first in the Midwest to join practices across the country to adopt FDA-approved, leading-edge artificial intelligence (AI) in breast ultrasound to detect cancers at their earliest stages.

The Koios AI for breast imaging tool analyzes lesions found on breast ultrasound and acts as a second opinion to support diagnostic accuracy. It works by comparing a patient’s ultrasound image to more than three million images in its database to offer a recommendation that supports the accuracy and efficiency of the breast radiologist.

“I make the finding, and the technology helps me make better informed decisions about lesions I might be on the fence about,” said Amy Patel, M.D., breast radiologist and medical director of the Breast Care Center. “The goal in using AI for breast technology is to ensure our patients have the best opportunity for early cancer detection and treatment. We also aim to minimize callbacks and unnecessary biopsies, and this technology aids in that as well.”

Dr. Patel said AI in breast ultrasound provides an extra degree of reassurance for patients about their results. This tool is also of no additional cost to the patient.

“Liberty Hospital is on the leading-edge when it comes to using advanced technology to detect and classify breast cancers,” Dr. Patel said. “Every tool we use truly provides us an advantage in the fight against breast cancer and ultimately benefits our patients.”
